Memories Unearthed is a sonic exploration of the Wet Earth Colliery situated in Clifton Country Park in Salford, Manchester. The installation is part of a practice-based research project that has grown out of my ongoing interest and experimentation with environmental recordings and their association with space and location.
The composition features recordings made from the environment in a variety of locations in and around the park. These sounds have been fused with recordings of machinery and other re-produced sounds all associated with the Wet Earth Colliery back in the 1800s. The environmental sounds were recorded with the help of local children and families during a weekend workshop entitled Sonic Environments - see below for further details.
"...it has been an exceptionally productive and creative project with explorative workshops resulting in a sound installation, used as part of a high profile event called Dirt & Dreams 2 in Clifton Country Park, one of the city's flag ship green spaces..."
"I would be pleased to commission Karen to produce similar pieces for audio based interpretation in the future."
(Dave Suggett, Senior Ranger, Salford City Council)
Sonic Environments was the title of the workshops designed specifically for school children and families and took place at the park on the 15th and 16th August 09. The workshops involved the children listening carefully to the environment around them and writing down and drawing the sounds they were experiencing and producing. The children also participated in a soundwalk around the park and made vital recordings which have been incorporated into Memories Unearthed and I am very grateful for their help.
